Patek Philippe Cortina Gondolo Sincere 5011/1J-001

Patek Philippe Cortina Gondolo Sincere 5011/1J-001 A striking Art Deco-influenced design, this is eye-catching but not as ostentatious as some of the other pieces in the Patek Philippe Gondolo collection, like the 7042/100G-010 for instance.
Exceptionally rare and therefore highly collectable. A mere 50 pieces were produced. Patek Philippe makes some of the most coveted watches in the world. Their commitment to precision and craftsmanship in watchmaking is legendary. To say this is an investment piece on a par with a piece of art would be no exaggeration.
Why the unusual name? Launched in 1993, the Patek Philippe Gondolo collection was named for established Brazilian retailer Gondolo & Labouriau, for which Patek Philippe made watches from 1902-1930. Hence the Art Deco styling. Patek Philippe refer to these as their 'form watches'. This relates to the form follows function principle that lies at the heart of the modern design philosophy. It's the idea that the design of something should reflect its purpose. The watches in the Gondolo collection are a contemporary take on the Art Deco style and feature popular shapes from the period, including rectangular and tonneau.
But this is a Cortina Gondola Sincere and it's markedly different from the other Gondolas. An extra special piece if you will. The 'Cortina' part of the name refers to the fact that this model was produced in 2001 especially for (and sold by), the Cortina Watch Company of Singapore. Hard to find and even harder to actually purchase. To see and actually handle it before you made a purchase would require you to fly out to Singapore unless you actually lived there of course. A very James Bond thing to do.
The Patek Philippe Cortina Gondolo Sincere 5011/1J-001 is a masterclass in how to craft a wildly collectable dress watch that could conceivably be worn on a regular basis rather than locked in a box and brought out for the next black tie event. It's an elegant 33 m wristwatch in 18ct yellow gold. The chains on the bracelet have been made to look like golden ropes. The bracelet is secured with a double-fold clasp engraved with the Patek Philippe seal. It has a solid caseback.
It's worth noting here that you don't often see a perfectly square bronze dial, which serves to accentuate the rarity of this particular wristwatch. Arabic numerals are located at 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10 o'clock. Gold-applied hour markers represent odd numbers on the clock. It's manual winding with hours, minutes and a small seconds function. The small seconds subdial is at 6 o'clock.
Patek Philippe is a watchmaker usually associated with males. Pablo Picasso loved and reportedly regularly wore a Patek Philippe Moon Phase watch . Celebrity fans include Ringo Starr and Brad Pitt. Rock royalty and Hollywood royalty. This is a watch brand that does not invite B-list celebrity endorsements. It makes perfect sense, then, that they count amongst their friends perhaps the most famous woman in the world: Queen Elizabeth II.
The idea is to pass your treasured Patek Philippe timepiece down through the generations. This is an heirloom. If Her Majesty is in agreement with that notion, Princess Charlotte is one very fortunate little girl.
